There are many sedative medications with perfect effect and they help very much. One of those is Codeine.

Codeine is an alkaloid of opiate group. Codeine is an analgesic derived from morphine, however its anaesthetizing effect is less toxic and not so strong comparing to morphine. Codeine has sedative effect. Codeine is successfully used as an antitussive medication.

It has less negative effect on respiratory tract comparing to morphine. In a combination with non-narcotic analgesic caffeine, phenobarbital, it is used in headaches, and neuralgia. This drug is a component of Bekhterev’s mixture.

Codeine is supplied in the form of powder, pills and injections. Before drug use, consult the doctor. He will indicate for you a required prescription and a right dosage. Codeine is a drastic drug, so only the doctor can indicate the required dose. Codeine is used for treatment of dry cough in different respiratory diseases, for relieving pain, and sometimes in diarrheas.

Dosage: as pain killer for adults is 15-60mg every 3-6 hours, as antitussive drug is 10-20mg four times a day. For children Codeine dosage is indicated depending on their age and body weight, therefore the doctor will indicate dosage, self-treatment is not recommended.

Codeine is not recommended for children under two years of age. Codeine phosphate can be indicated for little kids.

Codeine in injections provides fast effect. The analgesic effect is observed in 10-45 minutes after intramuscular or subcutaneous administration and in 30-60 minutes after peroral administration. Duration of analgesic effect is four hours, blockade of cough reflex lasts 4-6 hours.

Codeine is a very drastic drugs, therefore learn carefully all contraindications to avoid adverse reactions. Don’t take this drug if at you have ever experienced: allergy reactions to Codeine or to any narcotic analgesic, central nervous system diseases or head injuries, emphysema, asthma or other lung diseases as well as you have cardiovascular diseases, liver or kidneys disorders, alcohol abuse or narcotic drug addiction.

Inform your doctor if you use any over-the-counter drugs, such as aspirin, herbs, vitamins and other medications. Limit your activity related to attention and concentration.

During clinical investigations of Codeine some side effects have been observed.

The long treatment with Codeine in high doses leads to addiction. In case if you cease sharply your treatment with Codeine, it may lead to withdrawal syndrome, therefore your treatment should be under the doctor’s observance.

Also in Codeine use you may experience: constipation, dry mouth, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, weariness, nervousness, mental confusion, sleep disorders, high arterial pressure, skin itching.

If you observe side effects, visit the doctor. Usually in correct Codeine use side effects are rare.
